Office view? Looks nice. I’m being moved to a smaller cubicle with more foot traffic, super excited...

Wow, you can see the sky from your office?
Lucky bastard

I didn't have OCD until I saw your business cards and post-it notes so neatly laid out. Now I have OCD. Thanks.

I work in a NOC, we have no windows... S.A.D is definitely a thing.

CUBEFARM4LYFE
I got a promotion that moved me from a corner cube with a view like above to a 2nd floor courtyard tree window view where the cube doesn’t touch the wall so people cut through to go get coffee - but at least I got a promotion

the worst!

You have a view. Lucky dog. I too am living that cube life. Although I’m in essentially the basement. They're also moving my cube somewhere else, where I now have to share it with someone else. The government loves treating its contractors like second class citizens.

Hope you get a window one day!

I definitely lived in the internal cube life for a while.
I consider myself very fortunate! http://oppositelock.kinja.com/new-digs-17582…

My side desk is a completely unorganized pile of paper, if that makes it any better.

I admit that I’m spoiled.

Thanks! I’ll have to try this out.
But I’m not sure if I could give up my wallpaper...

I use it for my dual monitors at work. It jives well with big corporate controlled computers because it doesn’t install anywhere, just a stand alone application.
Now you can have twice the pleasant country side or maybe beach to the left rolling hills to the right? The possibilities are endless

More importantly than the business cards: Caterham Superlight R500, Indy/F1 racer Monopoly piece, and the 917 shift knob replica. =)

Nice, I didn't even notice that! Back to the OCD, I was staring at the monitors and wondering if they were slightly different :D (We have the R500 in black and yellow — it's glued to the frame of my son's bedroom mirror with about 30 other Hot Wheels. Actually, it just fell off. Ironic, since it's the lightest car on the mirror)

Nice! Also, nice to see someone else on here. I just got my bachelor’s in Geography/GIS earlier this summer.
![]() 08/25/2016 at 10:40 |

It used to be really easy to span both monitors natively (several years ago) - did that option go away with Windows 7?
![]() 08/25/2016 at 10:46 |

Sweet! I started off in civil engineering (the “safe” choice for someone who really wanted to do architecture), but ended up transferring and getting my degree in graphic design. Had a neighbor that was a geologist who encouraged me to apply for a job in oil & gas, worked in the industry for a while and then went back for a graduate certificate in GIS. Working with maps really fits me well - crazy roundabout path, but I made it (and I still do freelance design work on the side). What industry are you in?
![]() 08/25/2016 at 10:47 |

Ha - the monitors are the same, but one has a little sound bar attached to the bottom.
It clearly wanted to be free!

you can hit across both if the image is the right size. The program just makes it easy to put two pics together

I signed an offer with a DoD contractor, but I’m waiting to start while my security clearance gets processed. It’s more of a content/data management thing than playing around with ArcMap, but I’m still more than happy with that.
Hope the oil & gas industry pops up a bit for you - I know a couple of geology majors who are struggling to find work right now...
![]() 08/25/2016 at 11:14 |

Nice - hope that turns into a long and fruitful career for you, and you get to use your Arc skills before long. Once people learn you can make maps, it usually doesn’t take long!
My wife is also in the industry, and we are very thankful to both still have jobs right now. Definitely a tough time for many. I was very fortunate to get on at a startup right at the perfect time, it seems.

Thanks! I’m glad I can get some data management experience early on as it seems like there’s a lot of earning potential with that.
I only ever took one cartography course, but I really enjoyed the map design part of things. I was kind of sad that my school stopped teaching “traditional” cartography a few years ago, though.
![]() 08/25/2016 at 12:17 |

Yeah, definitely. Part of my job is data management as well, but it’s in another, industry-specific software package.
Data visualization made clear and beautiful is my jam, especially when it’s combined with maps.

Oh man, that second one is awesome.
I don’t Reddit a whole lot, but this is one of my favorite subs: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeauti…
There's usually a couple of map related articles on there.

Man that sucks with Apache. I knew of a few affected by that and decided not to go to Houston. But glad you’re still here!

Thanks, man. Glad I got to stick around, too. Very fortunate that it turned out the way it did for me. I’m guessing we know some of the same people - I was in the geology group.
